Building on an existing roof imposes a constraint that ground-level construction does not: the weight of the new structure is an added load on a frame designed for something else. That is why the area was divided into three hangars of 21, 14 and 14 metres rather than one large span — a smaller span means lighter members and less load transferred into the supporting structure.

An eaves height of five metres is sufficient for storage handling without increasing the roof’s exposure to wind, and in a building of this type negative uplift pressure on the roof can be more critical than the downward loads.

The walls are heavy-gauge corrugated sheet with side windows for natural light, and the roof is composite panel for weather resistance and thermal insulation.
